What to Know

Critics Consensus

Viewers desperately seeking a new erotic thriller might find Deep Water worth a dip, but it's far from director Adrian Lyne's best work.

Audience Says

Between the unlikable characters, a story that's mostly pretty dull, and an annoying ending, it's hard to pick Deep Water's worst quality.

But the basic thrills and surprising laughs it provides are more than enough to make for an entertaining evening. Patrick F I like Ben Afflec and Ana De Armas. I was disappointed in this movie. It at times felt like a cringy soft core p*rn murder mystery that you used to see on Cinemax at like 3am. If the point was that a cheating wife who makes her husband jealous enough to murder her lovers should stay with her murderer husband because he's a good dad, well that's sort of messed up. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review R C Ana de Armas plays a playful wife. How can it not pass the time? In the age of ethical non-monogamy, not as shocking as this would have been say a decade or twenty years ago. Ben Affleck's character is brooding and a ticking timebomb. But it's all about Ana de Armas. I'm so biased. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Ruby M Had unnecessary sexual tension scenes and most of the time the plot was lost. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Kyle M Either erotic thrillers are enjoyable nonetheless of its unappealing flaws or they're just that bad altogether. Aged, careless direction over the nonsensical plot decidedly losing its edge early on, deserting their characters which therefore position its main pair's beneficial caliber in aimless forms. (C) Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review John H Both Affleck and de Armas are amazing in this movie. I understand why some don't like this movie, but I found it extremely captivating. A lot is left to the readers' imagination, but I found this movie amazing. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Alec B A throwback to the erotic thrillers of the 90s. It isn't really "good" (Affleck gives a barely conscious performance and almost nothing that occurs makes any kind of sense) but that is part of the charm of these kinds of movies. Also, it does seem a little unfair and slightly suspicious that Adrian Lyne's return to directing after a 20 year hiatus with two big movie stars was unceremoniously dumped on a streaming platform. I'm sure that the quality of this movie wasn't really the issue but rather the content which doesn't really gel with the brand of 20th Century Fox's new parent company.
