Student Author Shares Love for Literature

Ward Melville High School senior Sofia Levorchick visited the district’s elementary buildings to read her newly published picture book, “Taylor the Owl Finds a Book.” The book encouraged students to foster a love for literature.

“I wrote this with the goal of promoting the magic within books and reading,” she said.

After the read-aloud, elementary students had the opportunity to ask Sofia questions. She explained the months-long writing and publishing process, and how she fell in love with writing in the first place. “Taylor the Owl Finds a Book” will be added to the elementary library collections across Three Village.

Sofia is off to Boston College after graduation and plans to study English.

    Student Graduates in Special Ceremony

The Three Village Central School District Board of Education held a special graduation ceremony during its June 12 meeting for Ward Melville High School student Emilia Retzlaff. Emilia is unable to make Ward Melville’s traditional graduation ceremony on June 30 as she prepares to go to the United States Naval Academy.

The Board of Education, administration and Emilia’s family stood as “Pomp and Circ*mstance” played in the William F. Connors Jr. Memorial Board of Education Meeting Room. Emilia proceeded to the podium where Ward Melville High School Acting Principal Dr. Paul Gold said a few words about her athletic and academic accomplishments.

“I think that not only are you lucky to be on this trajectory to the Naval Academy but even more importantly, I think that you embody everything that they would look for in a candidate and I am so proud of you,” said Dr. Gold.

Additionally, Board of Education President Susan Rosenzweig and Setauket resident and Navy Commander Jim Roth congratulated Emilia. Emilia was presented with her diploma and designated as a graduate of Ward Melville High School.
